I get this question quite a bit so I thought my blog would be a great place to answer it!

 

When is the best time to schedule a Chicago family photo session??

 

I think it’s a great question – but the answer depends on a few different things. One of the first things I would ask is what are you going to use the photos for? If the answer is for holiday cards – then you would definitely want to schedule your session no later than September or October to allow enough time to receive photos and order your cards. If you want photos as a keepsake, or to document your family – and not for holiday cards, then that gives you some flexibility. I would then ask, what season does your family enjoy the most? Are there any activities/settings that you would like to be included in the photos? For example, if your family loves to ice skate and really wants to be photographed ice skating, then obviously, you’d want to schedule something in a season that would allow for that. Likewise, if you love the beach and want to be photographed there – then schedule during a time when that is feasible and your family (and the photographer!) isn’t freezing at the beach!

 

Or maybe you just want to document your sweet family as it is right now. Then now is the best time to do it. It doesn’t matter what it’s like outside, sessions can always take place in your home. In fact, those are often the best because your home is a reflection of your family.

 

What about time of day? That’s another consideration to think about when scheduling a Chicago family photo session. While I LOVE the golden hour light right before sunset – that is not the ideal time for babies and toddlers! Good news: the morning light is also fantastic and much better for working around baby naps (which is something that I always like to do!)
