One of the most common questions I get from seniors and their families is, “Where should we take senior photos?”
And the honest answer is this: The best location is not about what is trending or what you have seen on Instagram. It is about choosing a place that fits you.
After years of photographing high school seniors in Chicago, I have learned that the location is just one piece of the experience. The magic happens when we pair the right location with your personality, your style, and the story you want your photos to tell.
That said, there are a few locations I come back to again and again because they work beautifully in every season and give us so much variety!
The Studio
The studio is one of the most versatile options for senior photos, no matter the time of year. It is a great starting point for sessions because it gives us a controlled, comfortable environment where you can ease into being in front of the camera.
What I love most about studio sessions is how simple and intentional they feel. The focus is completely on you. Your expressions, your personality, your style. There are no distractions, which allows your photos to feel clean, modern, and incredibly timeless.
The studio also pairs really well with any outdoor location. We can start inside for a more polished look, then head out to capture something completely different. It gives your gallery a balance that feels complete.
And for spring sessions especially, the studio is a perfect backup for those unpredictable Chicago weather days!
North Avenue Beach
If you are drawn to a more iconic Chicago look, North Avenue Beach is always a fan favorite! It offers such a unique mix of natural and city elements all in one place.
In the summer, the energy here is unmatched. Warm light, lake views, and that golden glow at sunset create images that feel effortless and vibrant.
In the fall, the beach takes on a softer, more relaxed feel. The crowds thin out, the light gets a little moodier, and the tones become more neutral and calm.
Even in the spring, North Avenue Beach can be such a beautiful option. The city starts to come back to life, and there is something really special about capturing seniors with that fresh, just-coming-out-of-winter energy. This location is perfect for seniors who want a mix of natural scenery and subtle city vibes!
The Riverwalk
The Riverwalk is one of my go-to locations for seniors who love a true city feel. It has so much variety, from clean architectural lines to water views to pockets of greenery tucked throughout.
What makes the Riverwalk so special is how dynamic it is. No two sessions here ever look exactly the same, which makes it perfect for creating something unique to each senior.
In the summer, it is lively and full of movement. In the fall, the light reflecting off the buildings creates a warm, glowy look that photographs beautifully.
Spring sessions here are especially fun because the city feels like it is waking up again. There is an energy and excitement that mirrors the season seniors are in as they prepare for graduation and what comes next. If you are someone who loves the idea of a modern, city-inspired session, the Riverwalk is always a strong choice.
Choosing the Right Chicago Location for You
At the end of the day, there is no one “best” location for senior photos. The best Chicago location for photos is the one that feels right for you.
That is why every session I photograph is a collaboration. We talk through your ideas, your style, and what you want your photos to feel like. From there, we build a session that reflects you.
Whether that means starting in the studio, heading to the beach, exploring the Riverwalk, or combining multiple locations, the goal is always the same… Creating images that feel natural, meaningful, and true to who you are in this season of life.
If you are starting to think about your senior photos, I would love to help you plan a Chicago senior session that fits you perfectly. My upcoming session dates tend to fill quickly, so reaching out early is always the best place to start!
