A question I often hear from seniors before their session is this: “What if I don’t know how to pose?”

And trust me, I get it! Being in front of the camera can feel a little intimidating at first. But here’s the truth I always come back to… You do not need to know how to pose to have amazing senior photos!

My job as a Chicago senior photographer is to guide you every step of the way so nothing feels awkward or forced. The goal is never to make you look overly posed. It is to help you feel comfortable enough to just be yourself.

That said, there are a few simple movements I come back to in almost every session because they feel natural, effortless, and photograph beautifully.

This is one of the easiest ways to instantly look more relaxed in photos. When you are not sure what to do with your hands, this gives them a natural place to go.

Running your fingers through your hair, lightly tucking a piece behind your ear, or just letting your hand rest near your face can soften your expression and add a little movement to the image. It is not about doing it perfectly. It is about creating a moment that feels real. This pose works especially well when paired with a little laugh or looking off to the side instead of directly at the camera.

Walking is one of my favorite “poses” because it does not feel like posing at all. It creates natural movement, helps you loosen up, and gives us a variety of images that feel candid and effortless.

I might have you walk toward me, away from me, or even just across the frame while we talk and laugh. Sometimes the in-between moments, like adjusting your outfit or glancing down, end up being the ones you love the most. This is also a great way to shake off any nerves at the beginning of your session. Once you start moving, everything starts to feel easier.

Sitting or squatting gives your gallery a completely different look and adds variety to your photos. It creates a more relaxed, grounded feel and often brings out a quieter, more natural side of your personality. This could be sitting on steps, a ledge, or even right on the ground depending on the location. Squatting can feel a little more playful and modern, while sitting tends to feel softer and more calm.

Just like everything else, I will guide you into what feels comfortable and natural for you. There is no one “right” way to do it.

At the end of the day, the best senior photos do not come from perfect posing. They come from feeling comfortable, confident, and like yourself at your Chicago senior session.

I will always give you direction, but I am also always paying attention to the little in-between moments. The genuine smile, the way you move, the way you relax as the session goes on. That is where the magic is!

Your senior session is not about performing for the camera. It is about celebrating who you are in this season of life.

If you’re starting to think about your Chicago senior photos, I would love to help you plan a session that feels like you. When you’re ready, reach out and we can start dreaming up the details together!

let's tell your story

I've photographed every personality type — the shy ones, the hams, the "I hate photos" crowd, all of them.

I know how to find what makes someone tick and pull it right into the frame. The goal is never a perfect pose.

It's a photo that looks so undeniably like you that you can't stop staring at it.
