Senior year is such a big season. It goes by quickly, and there are so many moving pieces between school, sports, friends, and planning for what comes next. When it comes to senior photos, I know you probably have questions, and I love that!
After years of photographing high school seniors across Chicago, I’ve heard just about every question imaginable. So today, I’m sharing some of the most common senior photo FAQs to help you feel confident and excited about your Chicago senior session.
When should I book my senior photos?
In Chicago, summer and fall are the most popular seasons for senior photos. Most of my seniors book in late winter or early spring to secure a summer or fall session date.
If you love greenery, warm weather, and that glowy summer light, aim for June through August. If you’re drawn to cozy layers and changing leaves, September and October are beautiful.
My biggest advice? Book early. Your senior year calendar fills up quickly, and you don’t want photos to feel like an afterthought. Booking early is key!!
What should I wear?
This is easily the number one question I get asked while planning senior photos! The short answer: wear something that feels like you.
The longer answer: I guide you through every step of planning outfits. I plan a style consult with every Shalimar B. Photography senior. This is the time to make sure your outfits feel cohesive, flattering, and true to your personality. I always recommend choosing outfits that bring variety to your photos while staying true to who you are.
What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?
I promise – you are not alone on this one! Almost every senior tells me this at the beginning of their session… And almost every one of them ends the session saying, “That was actually so fun!”
You do not need to know how to pose. Oh hey, that’s my job! I’ll guide you with natural movement, prompts, and direction so nothing feels stiff or overly posed. We’ll laugh, we’ll talk, and before you know it, you’ll forget my camera is even there.
Where do senior sessions take place?
As a Chicago senior photographer, I love incorporating a mix of studio, nature, architecture, skyline views, and locations that feel personal to you. While planning your Chicago senior photos, we’ll talk through what fits your personality and choose a location that complements your style.
Your photos should feel like your story, not a copy of someone else’s.
Can I bring props?
Yes – when they’re meaningful. I always encourage seniors to bring items that represent this season of life. Think about things like: sports equipment, musical instruments, or something that signifies your hobby or passion.
When it comes to props, the key is intentionality. We use props in a way that enhances your story without overwhelming the images.
How long does a senior session last?
A full senior session will last around 3-4 hours starting with and including hair & makeup application. That gives us plenty of time for outfit changes, variety, and different spots without feeling rushed. Plus, I like to continue to shoot until sunset!
I build sessions with breathing room so you can relax and actually enjoy the experience.
Why are senior photos important?
This one matters most.
Senior photos are about more than a yearbook requirement. They capture who you are at the edge of something new. This is the last chapter before everything changes – new routines, new people, new places.
