One of the most common questions I get as a Chicago senior photographer is:
“Should I bring props to my senior session?”
And my answer? Props can be amazing… Or they can be distracting. The key is making sure they actually mean something to YOU. But what really makes a great prop? The best props are the ones that tell your story – things that have been a part of your life and passions for years.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- An instrument you’ve played since 4th grade
- Your sports gear (but only if you actually play!)
- Art supplies if you’re always creating
- Books if you’re a reader
- Your letter jacket that you worked hard to earn
- Dance shoes that represent your passion
When a prop is meaningful, it adds a personal touch to your photos and helps capture who you truly are in this season of life.
What doesn’t work?
After years of photographing seniors, I’ve learned that some props just don’t work as well – especially when they feel forced or trendy. You know, the ones you see all over Pinterest that look cool but don’t really mean anything to you personally.
Quick story: Last year, a senior brought her grandmother’s vintage camera to her session. She grew up watching her grandma take photos at every family event, and it inspired her to join the yearbook staff. That camera? It wasn’t just a prop – it was part of her story. That’s the kind of detail that makes senior photos truly magical.
My Best Advice
If you’re thinking about bringing a prop, ask yourself this one question: “Will this still mean something to me in 20 years?”
If the answer is yes – bring it! If you’re unsure, let’s chat about it and see what works best.
And remember – you don’t need props to have an amazing senior session! Sometimes, just being yourself in a cool Chicago location is all we need to capture stunning, timeless photos.
