One of the biggest surprises for my seniors is discovering that their experience doesn’t end when the photo session is over. In many ways, it’s just beginning! From the moment you book your Chicago senior photos to the day you see your finished images for the first time, every part of the experience is designed to celebrate you and this exciting season of life. And while the session itself is a big part of the fun, there are so many details that happen behind the scenes to turn your portraits into something you’ll treasure for years to come.
After we’ve spent the day exploring Chicago, laughing together, changing outfits, and creating beautiful portraits, I head back to the studio to begin the next part of the process. This is where all those carefully planned details come together, and I start preparing your images for the big reveal. If you’ve ever wondered what happens after your senior photo session with Shalimar B. Photography, let’s walk through it!
Step One: Selecting & Editing Your Images
Once your session is complete, I begin reviewing the photographs we created together. During a Chicago senior session, we capture a variety of poses, expressions, outfits, and locations, so the first step is choosing the images that best tell your story. I’m looking for those standout portraits, the natural expressions, the little in-between moments, and the variety that makes your gallery feel like a complete reflection of you.
After selecting the images, I begin the editing process. This isn’t something I rush through! Every photograph is individually edited with attention to lighting, color, skin tones, and the overall look and feel of your gallery. My goal is to create images that feel polished and consistent while still looking like you. Your senior photos should enhance your natural features, not make you look like an entirely different person.
Editing is also where I make sure the different locations and outfits work together beautifully. Whether we’re photographing you against Chicago’s iconic architecture, along the lakefront, or in my studio, I want your final gallery to feel cohesive from beginning to end. There’s a lot of care that goes into preparing your images, and I want every photograph you receive to feel worthy of this milestone.
Step Two: The Image Reveal
A few weeks after your session comes one of my favorite days of the entire experience: your image reveal! This is the moment when you get to see your finished senior portraits for the very first time, and watching my seniors’ reactions never gets old. Seeing someone look at themselves and say, “Wait… That’s actually me?” will always be one of the best parts of my job.
Your image reveal is more than simply receiving a link to an online gallery. It’s an opportunity to sit down together, see your photographs, celebrate your favorites, and start thinking about how you want to enjoy them long after graduation. You’ve invested time and thought into planning your session, and I want you to have the chance to experience the results in a meaningful way.
During your reveal appointment, we’ll look through your images together. You’ll get to see the variety we created, from your favorite outfit and location to the unexpected photographs that end up becoming the ones you love most. Sometimes, the image you thought would be your favorite isn’t the one that makes you stop and smile. That’s part of the fun! You may discover a new favorite expression, a pose that makes you feel especially confident, or a photograph that captures your personality in a way you didn’t expect.
Step Three: Choosing Your Favorite Images & Products
Once you’ve seen your photographs, we’ll talk about which images you love most and how you’d like to preserve them. I know that choosing favorites can be difficult when you’re excited about so many of your portraits, so you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself. I’ll guide you through the options, answer your questions, and help you make choices that fit your preferences and how you envision enjoying your photos.
One of the things I love helping my Chicago high school seniors create is a custom album. An album allows you to tell the story of your session from beginning to end, bringing together your favorite portraits, outfit changes, locations, and those little moments in between. Rather than having your photographs scattered across a phone or computer, you have a finished collection that you can flip through, share with family, and revisit as the years go by.
Wall art is another beautiful way to enjoy your senior portraits. Imagine seeing a favorite photograph displayed in your home every day, celebrating this season of your life in a way that goes beyond a social media post. We can talk about which images work best for wall art, how you’d like to display them, and which portraits you want to see most often. Of course, digital images are another option, making it easy to share your favorite photos with friends and family, use them for announcements, and post them online.
The best part is that you don’t have to arrive at your reveal appointment knowing exactly what you want. I’ll help you explore the options and decide what makes the most sense for you. My goal is to make the process feel exciting and straightforward rather than overwhelming.
Step Four: Bringing Your Senior Photos Into Your Everyday Life
Your senior portraits deserve more than a quick appearance on Instagram before disappearing into your camera roll. Digital images are wonderful, and I absolutely want you to share your favorites. But I also believe there is something special about having photographs you can hold, display, and return to over time.
Think about how much changes in the years after high school. You’ll meet new people, discover new interests, head off to college or begin a career, and experience so many exciting milestones. Your senior portraits become a reminder of who you were at the beginning of all those changes. They’re a snapshot of your personality, your style, and your life before graduation.
Printed photographs and albums make it easier to revisit those memories. They’re also something your family can enjoy, especially during a season when everyone is preparing for the next chapter. For parents, senior year can feel like a whirlwind of excitement, activities, and big decisions. Having tangible photographs from this time creates something meaningful to look back on when the house feels a little quieter and your senior is off on their next adventure.
That’s why I put so much thought into helping my clients choose how to preserve their images. The goal isn’t simply to finish a photo session and deliver a gallery. It’s to create photographs that continue to matter long after the session itself is over.
Step Five: Planning What’s Next
And if you think the fun stops after your senior session and image reveal, think again! There are so many ways to keep celebrating your senior year with photographs. Depending on your plans and the timing of your session, you might want to schedule a cap and gown mini session, create college announcement photos, or plan a spring session featuring your college sweatshirt and gear.
These smaller sessions can be a fun way to document another milestone as graduation gets closer. Your original senior session captures who you are during this season of life, while cap and gown portraits and college-themed photos celebrate everything you’re working toward. Together, they help tell the story of your transition from high school to whatever comes next.
I love that senior photography can be part of an entire year of celebrating rather than a single afternoon on the calendar. There are so many moments worth documenting, and we can talk about which ones make sense for you and your plans.
Your Senior Photography Experience Is About More Than One Day
When you book a senior session with Shalimar B. Photography, you’re investing in an experience that begins long before your session and continues well after your photographs are delivered. From getting to know you and planning your outfits to creating your portraits, preparing your gallery, and helping you choose your favorite images, every step plays a part in making the experience special.
I know being in front of the camera can feel intimidating, especially if you’re worried about posing or aren’t sure what to expect. That’s why I guide you through the process from start to finish. You don’t need to have all the answers, know how to pose, or figure out what to do with your photographs on your own. I’m here to help you feel confident, enjoy the experience, and create something that feels like you.
Your senior year deserves so much more than one afternoon in front of a camera. It deserves to be celebrated, remembered, and documented in a way that will still mean something years from now. And I would love to help you do exactly that!
