Every year, as soon as the weather starts to cool down, I start hearing the same thing from seniors: “I think I want fall photos.”
And honestly? I completely understand why.
There’s something about fall in Chicago that just feels different. The city slows down a little, the temperatures become more comfortable, and suddenly everywhere you look there’s beautiful color. It’s one of the busiest seasons for senior portraits, and after photographing seniors in Chicago for nearly two decades, it’s easy to see why so many seniors fall in love with this time of year.
One of the biggest reasons is the scenery.
Chicago is already an incredible backdrop for senior photos, but once fall arrives, the parks become even more beautiful. Warm golden light paired with colorful leaves creates the kind of timeless images that never go out of style. Whether we’re exploring one of my favorite parks or photographing around the city, fall adds so much depth and warmth to every gallery.
Then there’s the weather.
If you’ve ever experienced a Chicago summer, you already know the heat and humidity can be… a lot. Fall brings cooler temperatures that make spending several hours outdoors much more enjoyable. Instead of worrying about the weather, you can simply relax, have fun, and enjoy the experience.
And can we talk about the outfits?
Fall fashion is one of my favorites for senior sessions. Sweaters, denim jackets, boots, layers, scarves, and rich colors all photograph beautifully. Layers also give us so much variety throughout your session. Simply adding or removing a jacket can completely change the look of your photos without needing another outfit.
Another reason seniors love fall sessions is that they fit perfectly into the rhythm of senior year. By early fall, you’ve settled into your classes, sports, and activities, but graduation still feels far away. It’s the perfect time to pause and celebrate this season before the whirlwind of college applications, holidays, and graduation events takes over.
One thing I always remind my seniors is that not every fall session looks the same. September still feels very much like summer in Chicago, while October usually brings peak fall color. By early November, we often have beautiful remaining leaves along with softer light and crisp temperatures. Every part of the season has its own personality, and together we’ll choose the timing that best matches the vision you have for your senior photos.
It’s no surprise that fall sessions are some of the first dates to book every year. Between the beautiful weather, gorgeous colors, cozy outfits, and relaxed atmosphere, it’s easy to see why so many Chicago seniors choose this season to celebrate such an exciting milestone.
