First Things First
First things first, your senior session is not a quick in-and-out photoshoot. It is a guided, fully planned experience designed to make you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. Most sessions begin at the studio, where you can settle in, meet everyone involved, and ease into the day. If hair and makeup are included in your session, this is where that part happens. You are not expected to show up “ready for camera.” You get time to relax, get pampered a little, and step into the session feeling confident without having to figure everything out on your own.
Kicking Off Your Session
Once hair and makeup is complete, we ease into your first look. This is where most seniors realize very quickly that the experience is not what they expected in the best way. You are not left standing around wondering what to do. Every single pose is guided. I will show you exactly what to do first, then walk you through it, and adjust everything as we go. If you are worried about being awkward in photos, this is usually the moment that worry starts to disappear.
Intentional Timing
A typical Chicago senior photo session lasts about 3 to 4 hours, depending on outfits and locations. That time is intentional. Nothing is rushed. We build in space for outfit changes, movement, location changes if needed, and breaks so you never feel overwhelmed or rushed through the experience. Most seniors are surprised by how fast the time actually goes because the session feels more like hanging out than “posing for photos.”
Outfit Changes
Outfit changes are a big part of the experience and are planned in advance. Most seniors bring multiple looks so we can create variety throughout the gallery. Each outfit gives a different energy to your images, and I help guide you on what works best for each part of your session. You do not need to stress about planning everything perfectly ahead of time. That is something we work through together before your session even begins.
Real Posing, Not Forced
During your Chicago senior photos, you will also move through different prompts and poses that are designed to feel natural, not stiff. You are never expected to stand still and “smile at the camera” for long periods of time. Instead, you will walk, shift, laugh, move your hands, interact with your environment, and be guided through natural moments that photograph beautifully. This is what makes your images feel real instead of forced.
One of the biggest questions I get is, “Do I need to know how to pose for senior pictures?” The answer is no. That is my job, not yours. Most seniors start out saying they feel awkward in photos, and almost every single one leaves saying they felt comfortable by the end. You do not need to practice, prepare poses, or figure anything out ahead of time. You just show up, and I guide the rest.
Location, Location, Location
As your session moves along, we may shoot in multiple locations depending on your session plan. This is never rushed or chaotic. Each location is chosen intentionally to match your vibe and give your gallery variety. We take our time, move at a comfortable pace, and make sure everything feels natural rather than overly scheduled.
Somewhere in the middle of your session, something always shifts. You stop thinking about the camera. You stop worrying about how you look. And you stop trying to “do it right.” That is usually when the best images happen. Not because you are trying harder, but because you are finally relaxed enough to just be yourself.
The Image Reveal
After your session, the experience is not over. You will come back for your image reveal, where you see your photos for the first time. This is where everything comes together. Most seniors are shocked in the best way because they are seeing themselves in a way they are not used to. From there, we go through your images together and talk about how you want to enjoy them long term, whether that is albums, wall art, or digitals that live beyond your phone.
So what actually happens during a senior photo session? You are guided every step of the way. You’re never expected to know what to do. You are given space to relax, move, and enjoy the experience. And you walk away with senior photos that feel like you, not a stiff version of you trying to get it right.
